Types of Nurse Practitioners Based on the Specialty
Unlike registered nurse (RN) who covers all medical treatments for the patients, nurse practitioner (NP) needs to take only certain specialty during the programs. This advanced registered nurse has to choose hi/ her specialty such as geriatric, cardiology, oncology, family practice and many more. There are various types of nurse practitioner based on the specialty.
Though they are vary in types, but all of them mostly have the same scope of practice such as; examining patients, giving diagnose, ordering medical test, interpreting the results, recommending prescription, educating patients and promoting health management.
Nurse practitioner could take their specialization during certification test. Of course after they fulfill the requirement of 1000 clinical hours, they can propose certification exam on the nursing organization with specialty they choose for example; Pediatric Nursing Certification board. There are various types of nurse practitioner certifications. The followings are types of nurse practitioner based on the specialty;
Adult Gerontology Nurse Practitioner
These types of nurse practitioner work in ambulatory care centers, internal medicine offices, community clinics and other medical center. They are responsible for treating and assessing common health problems experienced by older adults. They also diagnose and manage those health problems and further give education to the patients.
Acute Care Nurse Practitioner
These types of nurse practitioner give primary care to patients who need short- term treatment. They mostly work in places like; emergency rooms, outpatients’ centers, or mental health clinics. Acute care nurse practitioners give assessment for patients and give them treatment options. These types of nurse practitioner often consult with physicians if they found difficulty in taking care of patients.
Family Nurse Practitioner
These types of nurse practitioner work in order to fulfill the need of family needs. Family Nurse Practitioner, or well known as FNP, provides health care for all family members. They give treatment for children and adults; also educate them about management health care. This FNP mostly works in collaboration with physicians.
Neonatal Nurse Practitioner
Neonatal nurse practitioner generally works in Neonatal Intensive Care Units (NICUs) and nurseries. They are responsible for giving general and critical care to infants or new born babies. These types of nurse practitioner also take advocacy and leadership roles with parents and perhaps other healthcare providers.
Physiciatric Nurse Practitioner
Physiciatric nurse practitioner gives medical treatment to those who have mental health needs of issues. These types of nurse practitioner give treatment and therapy for patients and even prescribe medication (this task is based on the jurisdiction regulation).
Pediatric Nurse Practitioner
Pediatric nurse practitioner focus is on children or adolescences with health issues. They take care of patients with periodic or chronic illness. They also provide education about healthy life management to patients. These types of nurse practitioner work in several medical centers such as ambulatory care and underserved communities.
